📝 Key Mechanism Steps

Applying the Mini Circuit Breaker Lockout (PIT)

The following steps should always be performed as part of your facility’s full Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety program:

Part 1: De-Energizing and Preparation

1. Notify Personnel: Inform all affected employees and supervisors that the circuit or equipment is about to be shut down for maintenance.
2. Locate the Breaker: Identify the specific Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) that controls the equipment.
3. Shut Off Power: Move the breaker switch/toggle to the “Off” position.
4. Verify Zero Energy: Use a certified voltage detector or multimeter to confirm that the circuit is completely de-energized.
   • Self-Check: Test the meter on a known live source, then test the circuit, then test the meter on the live source again (Test-Measure-Test).

Part 2: Applying the PIT Lockout Device

1. Locate Lockout Holes: Ensure the MCB is the type that has the two small holes on the face of the switch toggle (where the pins will insert).
2. Ready the PIT Device: Press the activation button or mechanism on the PIT device to retract or disengage the pins.
3. Position the Device: Place the main body of the PIT lockout device directly over the toggle switch of the now-off circuit breaker.
4. Engage the Pins: Carefully align the two inward-facing pins of the device with the small holes in the breaker’s toggle.
5. Secure the Lockout: Release the activation button/mechanism. The pins should now snap into or extend to engage the holes in the breaker, locking the toggle firmly in the “Off” position.
6. Verify Device Security: Gently attempt to move the breaker toggle to ensure the PIT device is securely attached and cannot be removed without significant force.

Part 3: Final Lockout and Tagout

1. Apply Padlock: Insert your unique safety padlock (with your key) through the designated hole on the PIT lockout device.
2. Lock the Padlock: Close and secure your padlock. This physically prevents anyone from removing the lockout device.
3. Attach Tag: Secure your individual LOTO tag to the padlock shackle. The tag must clearly identify the person who applied the lock, the date, and the reason for the lockout
