Mini Circuit Breaker Lockout Pin In Toggle (PIT) Specifications
The Mini Circuit Breaker Lockout Pin In Toggle (PIT) is an essential safety device used for implementing a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure on electrical systems. It is designed to physically secure the toggle switch of a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) in the “Off” position to prevent accidental re-energization
⚙️ General Product Information
- Lockout Type: Pin In Toggles (PIT, also known as PIS – Pin In Standard).
- Primary Use: Locks out most miniature ISO/DIN circuit breakers (MCBs).
- LOTO Function: Designed to physically secure the MCB toggle switch in the “Off” position to prevent accidental re-energization.
- Installation: Tool-free, providing quick and easy application.
- LOTO Compliance: Designed to comply with safety standards like OSHA 1910.147.
- Recommended Breaker State: The switch must be in the “Off” position before application.
- Poles Supported: Typically suitable for single and multi-pole breakers with the appropriate toggle configuration.
📏 Material and Dimensions
- Material:
- Durable plastic (e.g., ABS or Glass-Reinforced Nylon).
- Includes steel pins for secure locking.
- Color: Typically Red (standard LOTO color).
- Operating Temperature: Resistant to a wide range, often specified as.
- Breaker Toggle Opening Fit: Fits toggle openings/lockout holes up to ) between the holes.
- Dimensions (Approximate Example): 40 times 14 (Width \timesDepth).
🔐 Padlock Requirements
- Lockout Points: Accepts one safety padlock.
- Max. Shackle Diameter: Accepts padlock shackles up to 9/32″ 7.5 mm in diameter.
- Compatibility: Works with all standard safety padlocks and lockout hasps.
📝 Key Mechanism Steps
- Preparation: The circuit breaker is switched to the “Off” position.
- Placement: The Pin In Toggles device is placed over the MCB toggle.
- Securement: The inward-facing pins (prongs) are aligned and inserted into the two small holes found on the breaker’s toggle.
- Locking: A safety padlock is applied through the designated hole on the lockout device.
- Isolation: The padlock prevents the removal of the device and thus prevents the breaker from being switched “On.”
Applying the Mini Circuit Breaker Lockout (PIT)
The following steps should always be performed as part of your facility’s full Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety program:
Part 1: De-Energizing and Preparation
- Notify Personnel: Inform all affected employees and supervisors that the circuit or equipment is about to be shut down for maintenance.
- Locate the Breaker: Identify the specific Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) that controls the equipment.
- Shut Off Power: Move the breaker switch/toggle to the “Off” position.
- Verify Zero Energy: Use a certified voltage detector or multimeter to confirm that the circuit is completely de-energized.
- Self-Check: Test the meter on a known live source, then test the circuit, then test the meter on the live source again (Test-Measure-Test).
Part 2: Applying the PIT Lockout Device
- Locate Lockout Holes: Ensure the MCB is the type that has the two small holes on the face of the switch toggle (where the pins will insert).
- Ready the PIT Device: Press the activation button or mechanism on the PIT device to retract or disengage the pins.
- Position the Device: Place the main body of the PIT lockout device directly over the toggle switch of the now-off circuit breaker.
- Engage the Pins: Carefully align the two inward-facing pins of the device with the small holes in the breaker’s toggle.
- Secure the Lockout: Release the activation button/mechanism. The pins should now snap into or extend to engage the holes in the breaker, locking the toggle firmly in the “Off” position.
- Verify Device Security: Gently attempt to move the breaker toggle to ensure the PIT device is securely attached and cannot be removed without significant force.
Part 3: Final Lockout and Tagout
- Apply Padlock: Insert your unique safety padlock (with your key) through the designated hole on the PIT lockout device.
- Lock the Padlock: Close and secure your padlock. This physically prevents anyone from removing the lockout device.
- Attach Tag: Secure your individual LOTO tag to the padlock shackle. The tag must clearly identify the person who applied the lock, the date, and the reason for the lockout
